an evolution in health & well-being

Welcome to Intelligent Nutrition Pocket Guides - a lively series of scientifically-based nutrition and health books that recognize that human nutritional needs and parameters were shaped on a nutritional landscape very different from the one we find ourselves today and that our current parameters for nutrition may be in discordance with our modern lifestyle. An informed understanding of our genetically determined nutritional needs is lacking from mainstream health and nutrition science. The goal of the series is simple: improve the health and well-being of our readers with accurate and up-to-date scientifically-based information.

Intelligent Nutrition is what happens when an anthropologist, a microbiologist, and a food scientist get together to write about human nutrition and health. Three authors, with 400 peer review publications between them, and an insight into human nutrition, health, and well-being informed by basic underlying principles of human biology and nutrition. Get healthy. Stay healthy.

You can read a short 'column' on Intelligent Nutrition here.

What your doctor will not tell you
C-sections and short-term breast feeding have no precedence in our evolutionary past. Before insurance companies and organized medicine, all children entered this world via the birth canal and participated in the time honored cycle of transfer of bacteria from mother to child. Like primates and a few of the modern forager groups that still follow traditional life ways today, breast feeding by the mother or other women in the group (wet nursing) continued for 24 to 36 months, sometimes longer.

The sudden rise in c-sections and drop in breastfeeding may be tinkering with nature in some not so good ways. In Goosebumps, Nipples & Tails you will learn about the delicate balance between the health of your newborn as it is related to receiving and nurturing intestinal microflora.

This pocket guide is based on the following article.

the thing about fiber you have never heard
A person living today will likely eat less fiber than any previous generation in human history. Americans currently consume about half of the recommended 25 to 38 grams a day promoted by the US government via its Food Pyramid. The problem is much worse. In It's the Fiber, Stupid! you may be surprised to learn that current US recommendations for fiber intake are, from an evolutionary perspective, low fiber recommendations. You may be surprised to learn that our not-so-distant ancestors consumed 100, 150 and up to 300 grams of fiber a day.

Dietary intake of fiber has been linked to a dizzying number diseases and ailments including heart disease, colon cancer, IBS, diabetes, obesity - and the list goes on. Importantly, fiber is food for the good bacteria that live in our bodies and our low fiber diet is literally starving them. These 'good' bacteria represent our first and last line of defense against invading pathogens and, as medical and nutritional science continues to discover, infectious pathogens play a possible causal role in heart disease and many cancers. Restoring our evolutionary determined intake of fiber and properly balancing our intestinal microflora is possibly the most important nutritional and health issue of the day. Continue to ignore our good bacteria and deprive them of fiber (food), will guarantee that we will continue to be sick.
